KA
Readers are designed to be read successfully by beginning readers who have
participated in a
phonics-based reading program. Each KA Reader story contains
decodable text of controlled vocabulary developed around word pattern families.
KA Readers build upon the Five Essential Reading Components of a phonics-based
reading program: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, fluency
and comprehension. Decodable text created using word pattern families means
that beginning readers can decipher the words using learned phonic skills.
At the end of each chapter, the reader finds a weblink. Visiting the weblink
to view online animations called webscenes, the reader gains visual reinforcement
of the text just read. The reader then returns to the book to read another
chapter. Each title's seven webscenes create not only a more engaging reading
experience but expand vocabulary and comprehension with the use of pop-up
words.
Pop-up
words identify objects, actions or concepts mentioned in the chapter. Combining
story with animations and pop-up words, action verbs and abstract concepts
become concrete. While the text explains words such as blame, faint and aim,
animations along with pop-up words show and identify the concepts.
Pop-up
words appear in either English or English-Spanish.
Spanish
speakers who are English-Language Learners benefit from seeing the more familiar
Spanish word alongside the less-familiar English word. Spanish text is included
in every KA Reader.
Finally,
following the last webscene of each book is access to online activities that
enable self-assessment
of the reader's comprehension, vocabulary and spelling
skills. All online self-assessment activities
also include Spanish text. |
